What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are used to replace missing tooth roots. They provide much-needed stimulation for your jawbone and support lifelike restorations.
It takes three parts to restore your smile with dental implants: implant posts, abutment pieces, and restorations. Depending on how many teeth you're missing, your restoration can be a crown, bridge, or denture. In addition to traditional implants, our practice is proud to offer All-on-4® dental implants that can support a full denture with just four implants.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
Durability
If you practice good dental health habits and follow your dentist's instructions, your dental implants can last for 40 years or longer. While the restoration attached to the implant will someday require replacement, the implant itself can last a lifetime.
Better Bone Health
Tooth roots provide stimulation to the jawbone. A missing tooth can cause the jawbone to atrophy, potentially leading to misalignment of your teeth and distortion of your jawline. Working in place of the missing roots, dental implants can stop further atrophy.

An Investment in Your Quality of Life
Modern dentistry provides numerous options to replace missing natural teeth. Thanks to state-of-the-art dental porcelain, traditional bridges and dentures are an affordable way to fill the gaps in your smile. Unfortunately, these options do not stop jawbone atrophy. Dental implants are the only treatment that supports your health by stopping further bone deterioration.
With traditional dentures and bridges, continued atrophy leads to changes in your facial features. This requires frequent adjustments to restorations to ensure they continue to fit properly. The costs of these adjustments add up over time, not to mention the number of trips you have to make to the dentist.
Implant-supported dentures and bridges do not require such frequent adjustments. Because they are anchored securely to implants, they also do not shift around. For many patients who have chosen dental implants at our San Diego, CA dentistry office, the long term health and quality-of-life benefits outweigh the upfront costs.

The Recovery Process Following Implant Surgery
Following your dental implant surgery, you may experience minor bleeding, swelling, and some discomfort for a few days. To ensure you stay healthy and infection-free, our dentist may prescribe antibiotics and an antiseptic mouthwash. You may be able to return to work after two to three days, but you should avoid strenuous physical activity until you're cleared by Dr. Stragier.
Maintaining good oral hygiene after surgery is important, but you will need to be careful. Slowly brush the area around the placement site, making sure to avoid irritating the incisions. You will want to keep your mouth clean and free of any leftover food particles. Rinse your mouth out completely after each time you eat. Be mindful not to forcefully spit water out, just let it fall.
You will be on a soft-food diet for a few days after surgery. It's better to take a few extra days to ensure you are well on the road to recovery before easing back into regular food. Once your gums have fully healed, you will be able to enjoy all of your favorite foods.
Your personalized care instructions will be different depending on whether you are replacing a single tooth or a number of teeth, but general implant surgery aftercare instructions include:
For Swelling
You can help reduce bruising, discomfort, and swelling by applying ice packs to your cheeks during the first few days of your recovery. Keeping your head elevated, especially when you sleep, can also ease swelling.
For Pain
Dr. Daniel Stragier will likely prescribe pain medication to help minimize discomfort during the first few days following your surgery. Our dentist may recommend taking over-the-counter medication in combination with your prescription.
For Bleeding
You will be provided with gauze to staunch any bleeding from your gums. While minor bleeding following surgery is perfectly normal and can be expected, if you notice excessive bleeding, contact our dental office immediately.
Caring For Your Dental Implants
Whether you replaced a single tooth with an implant-supported crown or an entire arch with implant-supported dentures, you should still brush twice and floss once a day. Maintaining a regular schedule of biannual visits to our San Diego, CA, dentist's office should be a priority. This allows Dr. Stragier to regularly check the condition of your restorations to ensure your dental implants provide you with a lifetime of benefits.
Complimentary Treatments Can Enhance Your Results
Replacing missing teeth with dental implants may not be enough to help you meet all your needs. If you're looking for an even greater transformation, consider these treatments:
Full Mouth Reconstruction
Do you want to address other dental concerns in addition to missing teeth? Work with Dr. Stragier to create a personalized full mouth reconstruction treatment plan. You can combine procedures to achieve your treatment goals in fewer appointments.
Invisalign
If you have mild to moderate dental misalignment, Invisalign® clear aligners can comfortably and discreetly straighten your teeth. When combined with dental implants and restorations, this treatment can give you a gorgeous, uniform smile.
In addition to a full mouth reconstruction or Invisalign, you can also receive important preparatory work, such as a bone graft or sinus lift, at our San Diego practice.
